In early 1982, the Sheraton Hotel opened in Doha. Designed by the American architectural firm William L. Pereira, it looked like a spaceship had time-traveled and landed in the desert. The intervening period saw a number of master plans-including one by Pereira's office-and bold modernist buildings appeared on the capital's reclaimed corniche. A new country made through the building of new institutions and new urban infrastructure.
