Muhamed and Reuf Kadic

The brothers Muhamed and Reuf Kadic returned to Sarajevo in the 1930s, after studying architecture at the Technical University in Prague. It was during this decade that they designed some of the most important modernist buildings in Sarajevo. The nature of their collaboration has yet to be fully clarified; there is reliable evidence that they worked together on certain buildings, but such evidence is lacking for others.
Muhamed and Reuf Kadic clearly belonged to a faction that was closer to the Club for Old Prague (yes to Modernism, but not at the cost of demolishing old Prague). Their Modernist design for the Pension Fund building in the inner city centre in Sarajevo,6 which blends harmoniously with the existing historical fabric with its Ottoman and Austro- Hungarian architecture, implicitly places them among the proponents of Modernism who took existing historical architecture into account (their work could be described with the phrase: yes to Modernism, but not at the cost of demolishing or degrading the historic urban matrix of Sarajevo).
